Kayak trip along Big Blue River in Southern Indiana

Updated: Jul 2, 2020

When it comes to adventures this is one that was full of drama. This trip was created on very short notice. We decided on Friday night that we would take an over-night trip the very next day. We woke up Saturday morning around 9:00 AM and slowly began planning our trip. By 12:30 we were on our way out the door. We stopped by Wendy's (our most visited fast food establishment) and grabbed some lunch. As typical for one of our adventures we chose to drive separate... For 2.5 hours one way. When we get to the pick-up point, We are quickly told by the property owner that we were not welcome on their side of the river so we were forced to park our van on the opposite side of the bridge in a parking area, Everything was fine. It was at this point that I'm informed that we forgot to pack the oars for the trip. By this time it's nearly 4:00 PM. Our frustration levels were climbing steadily and now just a little faster. We decide we are going to see this trip through to the end, but first we will need new oars. So, here we are in the middle of nowhere, with no reception trying to Google Map the closest Walmart. We finally get enough reception and patience to find one. It happens to be 30 minutes away. This is in the heart of the Corona / Covid-19 pandemic so supplies are scarce, especially with anything having to do with outside activities and products shipped from over-seas. Fortunately there were 3 oars in stock and we bought 2 of them (keeping in mind that we had 8 sets of oars at our home, now we have 10). Now it's time to go to the launch site. That didn't work out so well either. It was at this time that we learn that we are not able to access the river from this property and that we will have to find a new launch area. I was not aware at that time of how to find public access areas to enter waterways. We would typically do the "Hope & Pray" method of parking spots while we travel, so far so good. Not this Time! So we found a campground along the river and decided we would try to park there. What we found was Recreation Unlimited, which was one of the most unique campgrounds I had ever come across. What an exciting and adventurous trip this was! It started rough but it finished strong. It was an adventure like no other I had been on previously, or in the future. There was just so much to this
